Sensory Avoidance

According to research by the AutismSpeaks Foundation, people with autism often experience hypersensitivity triggered by bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, and certain textures. (1)

This over-responsiveness can be overwhelming and lead to sensory avoidance.

Sensory avoiders try to escape everyday stimuli that most people can easily tune out.

According to research by the Understood Foundation, sensory avoiders often (2):

  • Are seen as “picky eaters.”
  • Avoid close contact, hugs, or kisses (even from family)
  • Scared by sudden sounds and bright lights
  • Hear background noises others don’t
  • Reject scratchy or tight clothes
  • Concerned about being touched or bumped in line or play
  • Avoid swings and playground equipment
  • Struggle with spatial awareness
  • Prefer quiet settings, avoids crowds

Sensory overload can feel like an intense anxiety attack, causing the person to escape the situation or withdraw into oneself.

Supporting with Sensory Tents

Accommodating sensory issues can ease the discomfort and calm down overwhelmed senses.

Babwell sensory tents provide a controlled environment that mitigates overwhelming stimuli. Our tent limits bright lights and creates a safe, predictable environment that helps to wind down.

Our sensory tent is the perfect accommodation because it’s child-friendly, easy to set up, and works in every environment, from home to the classroom.

Caregivers can easily customize the tent depending on their needs.

They can open or close the window and doors and design the tent’s interior depending on the user’s needs (from blankets and pillows to fidget toys and light play).

How tall child can fit inside?

There’s no height limit because the user is meant to be sitting in there. But anyone below 60 inches will feel the most comfortable inside.

How many kids can fit inside?

The tent is specifically designed for individual use. When used by more than one person simultaneously, the intended calming effect may not be effective.

Can the tent be used indoors, outdoors, or both?

The tent is designed to be used indoors only. Do not use the tent outside.

Is the tent easy to set up?

Yes, just unzip the bag, and the tent will pop up. Then, just add the roof pole for extra durability. There’s also a video guide showing how to assemble and disassemble the tent.

Can adults fit in the tent?

Theoretically, adults can fit inside, but it will not be comfortable unless one is under 60 inches tall. The tent size is 35.4 * 35.4 * 35.4 in.

Is the tent 100% blackout when the door and window are closed?

The material itself is 100% blackout. The closed door and window will let some light in from the sides.

Does the tent come with lights?

No, the tent does not come with lights.

Can disabled adults fit in it?

The tent is large enough to accommodate an adult in a seated position. But moving inside and out of the tent is a little awkward for an adult and definitely for anyone with moving restrictions.

Does the material dampen the sound?

This sensory tent has a slight effect on sound isolation, but do not buy it for this purpose. Its main purpose is not to isolate sound but to create a good environment to calm down.
